A temple priest

was getting ready for the sacred ceremony he was about to perform.  The people started gathering early because he'd come such a long way to participate on this day.  As the ceremony was about to begin, a stray dog wandered close to the alter.  Without much ado, the priest took the dog my the collar and tied him to a nearby tree - then he began the ceremony.

Years later, no one could remember what the priest said, but they did remember that before the ceremony could start, they had to tie a dog to a tree.  Tying a dog to a tree became the ceremony.

Be mindful of meaningless actions that we give great merit to.  Conversely, anything done with devotion is sacred.
